The Book Week theme for 2016 was Australia: Story Country.

This year’s Book Parade was an event not to be missed. The costumes were fantastic and there was such a buzz of excitement and anticipation amongst the students and visiting parents that the music was at times inaudible. The winning costumes were harder to choose than ever. Many students paired up to parade as a couple of recognisable book characters this year; even a vegemite sandwich made an appearance!

Staff got in the spirit of the parade as well and many coloured sheep participating in a variety of activities were spotted and we had to find their missing green counterpart but the King and Queen of THRASS won on the day. Many photographs were taken and students and families will be able to enjoy these at the end of term assembly or can view or download them on the St Andrew’s Facebook page here.

We had nearly 100 students across all stages over the three days come and enjoy special lunch and afternoon tea time activities. Students also helped launch “Our little voices have big things to say” review wall. They did this by completing review cards for a rubber this week and helped share their favourite stories and reasons with the rest of the community. There are some great titles listed on our wall and our students have made some wonderful next suggestions for their peers. Well done and thank you to everyone for helping us celebrate our great Australian authors, illustrators and stories.

Thank you to The Children’s Bookshop for coming in and providing us with a book fair for our book parade as well. Parents were able to purchase a book to celebrate literature long after the book parade ended and could even purchase copies of our visiting author Tim Harris’ series to have signed later in the day. They even convinced the publishers to provide St Andrew’s students with advanced copies of Book 3 in his series (public release date 1 September). These will arrive at the library before this week ends and students will receive them next week.

Tim Harris, author of Exploding endings visited just after the book parade and kept us easily entertained for an hour with his 79 reasons for being late and anecdotes any family member could relate to and recognise. He even had students and staff performing skits for our amusement. If you haven’t got your hands on a copy of his book yet, reserve it at the library. He eagerly stayed back after his presentation to sign copies of his books and meet his fans. Tim also joined Mrs Robson and other staff who knew him well for lunch.
